Amanda is my name. I was born in England I am a Yorkshire girl, immigrated here at 7 years old. I was brought up in Wellington City, New Zealand. I attended Newtown Primary, Raroa Intermediate and later Wellington Girls College. When I left school my first role was office junior at a large bank. I later could not endure office work and fled to work at a service station. After that I have been a labourer and slate layer assistant. I met my first partner fairly young and we had a baby. From there I went on to have 4 children. Somewhere in there starting a family young, things got a bit haywire around about the recession. I left my partner after about 8 years, a crazy time looking back there was so much going on. Some of the contributing factors would of been a lack of proper nutrition and exhaustion. I did not sleep well. And parts of the past were taking a toll. I started exercising and taking magnesium. I had a passion to learn more about my body and how to be healthy. I did my first study about then going back to school as an adult learner and took computers which is pre laptops and mobile devices era. I figured I would need to know how to use one. And I started reading a lot.
I then began my time as a student doing a Social Sciences Certificate and went on to further study with a Diploma of Psychology and later a Bachelor of Counselling Addictions, through Wellington Institute of Technology. As well as continue to raise my family and working as a cleaner, doing two paper rounds, and volunteering at the local community centre with Citizen Advice Services and administration in Wainuiomata. I also added to my family two further children. As my children were teens and began to leave home I ended up employed in various sectors Ngos mainly. Various roles in corrections, teaching and at the court house doing brief intervention of addictions. I left disillusioned with those industries because it did not fulfil my passion. It really was an industry that needs attention, but so did I. I needed to do more work on myself. This time inner work. I gave real estate a go after that studied and got quals quickly but once again not my passion....
I moved to the countryside fulfilling at least one dream to have land and animals. Learning as I go about keeping stock and growing vegetables. I am embedded in a small rural community of farming and lifestylers. I am surrounded by hard working and passionate people that share a love of the land. My last child left home a few years ago. I worked in local mills and factories and shops for a time. I now am employed as a support worker.
And then an industry came up out of nowhere that I believe to be fitting in my values and beliefs. Health Coaching. Its the industry I can say I have the most passion for. The business of transformation making changes for a better quality of life. I can understand how this role has been born out of need. Health Coaching is the filling in the sandwich, its the Jam that holds it together. Filling the gap between just doing as you are told by professionals, or just throwing your hands in the air and procrastinating. There is now another way you can work on yourself with guidance and accountability. Knowing that you are not alone. So here I am still working on myself using what I have learnt, but with a desire to help others. I think its a continuum there is no perfect.
I chose to study as a Health Coach. I am now qualified and registered. And the journey continues....
